Blimey.  What a time I've had

August 2, 2009

Blimey !!!!!...What a time I have had since getting back from the Australian tour.

Roger Daltrey called to ask if I would play with "The Who" for a Teenage Cancer Trust Ball at "The Emirates Stadium" ...it was incredible playing those classic pieces including "Pinball Wizard" and standing next to Pete Townsend.... I just had a big grin all the time...what an evening and I think the evening raised over £400.000 also thanks to all the guests including the Gunners 1st.team.... a week later and it was getting myself prepared for the International Society of Bassists invitation to play at the Bi-Annual convention which was held at Penn State Campus this time ...it has a different venue every two years.

It really was an astounding array of truly great vituosi and I managed to get to as many recitals as possible...eg: - Bach unaccompanied cello concertos on Bass, Purple Haze etc just to prove what an incredibly versatile instrument we play.... and not one Bass-Guitar!

I was welcomed and treated as a real friend by Madeleine Crouch the General Manager of ISB and also Rob Nairn professor of Bass at Penn State, got to meet some wonderful people and players. It’s so true that the really great players are just lovely people.

David Gage is making a Czech-ease travel bass for me and I am very fortunate to have him and " Thwaites" looking after me and Victoria.

Madeleine had asked Richard Thompson to write something that would feature me, an honour indeed, and of course Richard wrote an astounding piece which was about an hour and quarter long was well received , the piece named "Cabaret of Souls" also featured a 10 piece string section invited by Rob Nairn (Pres. of the Convention) in fact all information for "Cabaret Of Souls " may be found on www.richardthompson-music.com including all personnel taking part, Peter Askim (http://www.peteraskim.com) director of Music at Idyllwild and Principle Bassist arranged and conducted the piece, he was also my guide and courteous advisor during my stay in Penn State. I am very grateful for his genuine friendship and for making me feel relaxed during the concert.

Since returning to UK I have been so inspired by the experience that I have started to work on my bowing which has always been weak, in fact it is DAY ONE for me again and at my age.

I have been invited back to play at the next Convention San Francisco 2011..started practicing already ....never be good enough, but it is a great journey to be on.

Whoppers as ever
